| | | | | | | Eastern Europe, as that term is used on this site, is a term of convenience, but its composition is very close to the definition used by the United Nations. The sole difference is that we have included Greece in Eastern Europe, because of its geographical location and because of the Orthodox Christianity it shares with many other countries in this region. Despite shared cultural elements, and its geographical location, Greece is exceptional in part because, during the Cold War, of all the nations in this area of the world, it alone managed to stay outside the sphere of influence of the USSR. The other oddity of our use of “Eastern Europe” is that it includes the Russian Federation, a continental sized country that stretches across Eurasia from the border with Finland to the Pacific. Eastern Europe, thus defined, is complex culturally, religiously, and linguistically. The dominant languages in many parts of the region are Slavic, but in Romania and Greece, Indo-European languages dominate; many countries have populations that include both Orthodox Christians and Muslims. In short, this is a complex region, rich in elements of shared history and culture, which now attracts an increasing number of visitors as tourists, and as birders. | | | |
