Suriname

Paramaribo
The area around the capital of Suriname has some good forest and marshes. Check the Botanic Gardens, the marshes east of the city, the road to the bridge over the Río Saramacca, and the road southeast to Kraka. Birds include Azure Gallinule, Paradise Jacamar, Guianan Piculet, Blood-colored and Yellow-tufted Woodpeckers, Crimson-hooded and White-bearded Manakin, Cinnamon Attila, Cayenne Jay and Finch’s Euphonia. For some more details see Wheatley, Where to Watch Birds.

Brownsberg
A small reserve about three hours drive south of Paramaribo, it protects some good forest. Some of the good birds include Marail Guan, Guianan Toucanet, Rufous-throated Antbird (and 20+ other sorts of antbirds), Capuchinbird, White Bellbird, Guianan Gnatcatcher, Blue-backed, Red-billed Pied, and Opal-rumped Tanagers, and Red-and-black Grosbeak. For some more details see Wheatley, Where to Watch Birds. Arrange for accommodations in this area through STINASU (Foundation for Nature Preservation), PO Box 436, Jongbawstraat 13, Paramaaribo (tel: 75845/78421).

Voltzberg-Raleigh Falls Reserve
This reserve, some 200 km inland from Paramaribo, supports some fine birds. Wheatley mentions Little Chachalaca, Black Curassow and Guianan Cock-o0f-the-Rock as specialities, but the area also is home to Great Tinamou, Blue-throated Piping-Guan, Gray-winged Trumpeter, four macaws (Blue-and-yellow, Scarlet, Rad-and-green, and Chestnut-fronted) and other species.

Suriname, originally a Dutch colony in the Guianas, but independent since 1975, has a bird list of 720 species. There are no endemics.
