Asunción Near the capital there was some good birding sites. Wheatley advises birding the waterfront, the botanical gardens on Premier Presidente, the Parque Nu Buazu nearby and the northern side of Asunción Bay, either by boat or along the road on the northeast side. The special birds he notes include Spotted Nothrus, Giant Wood-Rail, Nanday Parakeet, Great Furous Wooodcreeper, Ochre-breasted Pipit, and Gray-and-chestnut Seedeater, among others, plus a long secondary list of species.

Caaguazú Area – Estancia la Colndrina PNR The larger part of the cattle ranch and cotton farm has been designated a Private Nature Reserve, protecting remnant Atlantic forest. Prior permission to visit the ranch, and details such a specific location, must be secured from FMB (Fondacion Moises Bertoni, Ave, Gaspar Rodriquez de Francea 770, CC 714, Asunción (tel. 440-328 or 444 253, fax 440 239). Special birds include Long-tailed Potoo, Canebrake Goundcreeper, Solitary Tinamou, Pileated Parrot, Robust Woodpecker, Southern Bristle-Tyrant, Sao Paul and Bay-ringed Tyrannulets, and Creamy-bellied Gnatcatcher. The ranch is located near the town of Caaguazú, 180 km east of Asunción.

Special birds include Black-fronted Piping-Guan, Pileated and Blue-fronted Parrots, Saffron and Spot-billed Toucanets, Helmeted and Robust Woodpeckers, Dinelli’s Doradito, Southern Bristle-Tyrant, Bay-ringed Tyrannulet, Creamy-bellied Gnatcatcher, and Blackish-blue Seedeater. The ranch is located near the town of Caaguazú, 180 km east of Asunción.

Concepción This port city, 312 km north of Asunción, is across the Paraguay River from some excellent chaco habitat. According to Wheatley the best place to bird this area is from the Puerto Military, where a trail leads into the chaco. Boats can be hired at the port. Some of the good birds: Crowned Eagle, Giant Wood-Rail. Nanday Parakeet, Checkered, White, and Green-barred Woodpeckers, Great Rufous Woodcreeper, Purplish and Plush-crested Jays, White Monjita, Tawny-bellied and Double-collared Seedeaters, Golden-winged and Solitary Caciques, and Bay-winged and Screaming Cowbirds.
