GEORGETOWN Remnant forest around the capital supports such birds as the Blood-colored Woodpecker (confined to the Guinean lowlands), and the rare Bearded Tachuri, plus White-bellied and Ferruginous-backed Antbirds, Black-crested and Barred Antshrikes, Yellow Oriole, Painted Tody-flycatcher, Reddish Hermit, and Brown and paradise Jacamars. LETHAM AREA – KANAKU MOUNTAINS Primary forest covers the slopes of these mountains, only 15-20 km south of Lethem. Among the birds: Harpy Eagle, Black-and-white and Ornate Hawk-Eagles, Tufted Coquette, Blue-chinned Sapphire, Blue-tailed Emerald, Amethyst Woodstar, Purple-breasted Cotinga, Crimson Fruitcrow, Amazonian Umbrellabird, Guianan Cock-of-the-Rock, and Finsch’s Euphonia. LETHAM AREA – RUPUNINI SAVANNA This remnant dry grassland, dotted with termite mounds also has some areas of gallery forest and a few pools. Some of the notable birds: Rio Branco Spinetail, Reo Branco and White-bellied Antbirds, Crested Doradito, Great-billed Seedeater, Sharp-tailed Ibis, Saffron-crested Typrant-Manakin, Smoky-fronted Tody-Flycatcher, Black-hooded and Bare-eyed Thrushes, and Bicolored Wren. IWOKRAMA FOREST The newly improved road from Guyana to Brazil runs through this site. The area supports a number of rare birds such as Gray-bellied Goshawk and Yellow-knobbed Curassow, Sun Parakeet, Red-fan Parrot, Todd’s Antwren (plus 20 other sorts of antbirds), Capuchinbird, and Guianan Cock-of-the-Rock.
